ABORIGINAL CELL - NEWCASTLE GAOL, TOODYAY
Photograph showing back wall section and corner of the Aboriginal cell in the Newcastle Gaol, Toodyay.
One small air vent is evident near the ceiling. Leg irons and a chain are secured to an iron rail on the floor.
Floors are wooden boards.
There are brown stains (foxing) on the photo, most notably on the right hand side.
In 1980-81, restoration work was carried out to the Old Gaol and Police Station Complex with the restoration continuing through 1982-83. Possibly the photograph dates from this time.
Major cracks in the external walls of the cell block and cells 8 and 9 (the cell in this photo) were repaired. The interior lining of cell 9 (iron was built into the walls to prevent prisoners from scraping the mortar from the stonework) was restored.
