38th Artillery Battery
1916Sepia coloured photograph of Australian Defence Force members seated in a mess hall with officers standing to the side. A sign at the back identifies the men as belonging to the 38th Battery, Australian Field Artillery, 1916.
The First World War in Europe was characterised by exchanges of heavy artillery fire. The 38th Battery, part of the 10th Field Artillery Brigade, was formed in Egypt in 1916, where this photo was likely taken. Many Australian military units were formed up and trained in Egypt, which was a British-occupied territory at the time. After training, the 10th Brigade deployed to the Western Front.
