MCQUEEN SISTERS - HETTIE, CHARLOTTE AND JESSIE
c. 1910B/W Print. The three youngest McQueen girls at the beach. Twins, Hettie and Charlotte, are dressed in sailor suits, dark stockings and shoes. Hettie is sitting on a rock, Charlotte is standing and Jessie, in spotted skirt, long sleeved jumper, dark stockings and shoes, is sitting at her feet. All have long curly hair tied back with a ribbon bow. Each has a wooden spade; Hettie has a metal bucket and Jessie a wooden one with metal banding. A wave is breaking in the background.
The house at 36 Devon Road was built by John McQueen, a capenter from Scotland. He, his wife Harriet and children lived in tents on the property while he worked nights and weekends to build the house. Originally the house was to be one level, however, during construction his wife gave birth to twins and later another child so he decided to build on a second floor. Upon Johns death, his daughter Charlotte and her husband moved back into the home for several years.
