Historical information

Oil of sassafras was widely used from the 17th century until 1960 as a primary flavouring in root beer, teas, and candy, and as a fragrance in soaps and perfumes. It was banned by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States of America in 1960 after studies found its main component, safrole, is a carcinogen.
