A black and white photographic image of the 1890 Proclamation Day welcome arch constructed for the three days of celebrations commencing on 19th October 1890. The arch is across York Street east to west, close to the corner of York Street and Peels Place Albany. This view looks North. The St. Johns Church and town halls are visible in the background.

Historical information

This welcome arch was part of the proclamation day celebration decorations to mark the return to Western Australia of the Governor, Sir William Robinson and the constitutional delegation sent to appear before a Parliamentary Select Committee in London in August 1890. The Western Australia 1889 Constitution Act finally became law when it received the Royal Assent on 15th August 1890 and came into operation when proclaimed in the colony on 21st October.
