The hospital was named the Metropolitan Infectious Diseases Hospital at the time the photograph was taken and was located on Selby Street, Subiaco. The hospital was established in 1938 as the Victorian Hospital and initially provided isolation care for smallpox patients.
In 1956 the hospital was renamed the Shenton Park Annexe and in 1966 it became the Perth Rehabilitation Hospital.
