Historical information

This painting is based on a photograph of George Maley (GMME0584) held in the museum collection. It was painted by Anthea da Silva at Geraldton in February 2016 and displayed in her exhibition "Retro-Version" held at the Greenough Museum & Gardens from 11 to 30 March 2016.

George Morrison Maley (19/10/1899- 08/01/1976), the oldest son of John Morrison and Ethel Maley (nee Clinch) was born at Greenough, and grew up in Northampton.

Anthea Da Silva (b.1958, Victoria) has always drawn and painted, with a special interest in portraiture & figurative work. A fascination in anatomy, physiology and kinesiology has seen her blend careers in pediatrtric occupational therapy, tertiary Visual Arts teaching, Regional & Community Art Gallery programming. Anthea has facilitated arts workshops in WA, Victoria and NSW; and has developed large-scale urban art and video projection artwork, worked as an arts lobbyist, and as an artistic director/ facilitator with festival teams.

Anthea da Silva is now a portrait artist of note in Australia and in January 2020 she was the winner of the National Gallery’s Darling Portrait Prize.
