Historical information

The writing on the postcard suggests that it was sent by a sibling of Miss M Brown, at the request of her mother, who received this postcard blank from England. The postcard was sent mid-reign of King Edward VII from within Australia, although it could have been delivered to Australia much earlier, perhaps shortly after the coronation of King Edward VII in 1901. Miss Brown would not have received the postcard until well into 1906, as inland postal service to Kalgoorlie was fairly recent at that time. The discovery of gold in 1892 in Kalgoorlie attracted many settlers to the area, creating a growing settlement in the Goldfields and intensified race relations with Aboriginals in the area.

Statement of significance

Provenance: England
Representativeness: Demonstrates how the culture of Edwardian England and the continuing significance of the British monarchy relayed to the outback via the early postal service. It also symbolises the migration of single women to the Goldfields region, and how colonial settlers expanded their settlement into remote parts of Australia after initial settlement.
