RECEIPT FOR SEWING MACHINE

c. 1890
Overview

Yellowed pieces of paper with black text, in several pieces that have been repaired with adhesive tape which has damaged the paper. Because of the damage the text is barely legible. Text reads: [Office of THE SINGER MANUFACTURING / 6 at et.al.]. Possible model number is written as [824308?].

Historical information

Assuming the handwritten number on the receipt is the serial number of the sewing machine purchased, the item purchased would have been manufactured between 1888 and 1895. The item must have been purchased overseas as the Singer Manufacturing Company did not have a presence in Australia at the time but had offices in New York, Hamburg, Quebec, London and Glasgow. The McGurk family likely brought it over when they emigrated to Western Australia.
