"Geraldton Tannery 22nd August 1878
Dear Sir !
Your messenger who delivered your note of the 16th inst said you would call here but as you have not done so I beg to inquir of you how much bark chopped bark you have and what length is it chopped also would you be willing to let me have the same when I want it so that I would not have to take the lot at once I mean would you let me have a ton at the time at 5.5 – per ton delivered to the tannery and payable three months after delivery. If you agree to the above conditions will you be good enough to send me one ton at your earliest convenience and if the bark suits me I shall take the lot providing the quantity is not more than about 10 tons
Your hide belt leather is finished.
Please answer to this by the bearer.

This letter is one of the few surviving reminders of what was briefly a successful industry at Geraldton. The demand for wattle bark lead to the widespread clearing of land in the surrounding region.
