SHEARING TEAM AT 'SMOKO'
c. 1890Unknown team of Shearers sitting on a verandah following lunch - possibly at Tunney's property. Shearer's were usually fed by the property owner's wife - morning and afternoon teas and a hearty lunch. If shearer's were staying on the property tea was also provided. Some self contained teams may have had their own cook, but most farmers had what was called 'cocky teams' made up of 2-6 shearers and associated shed staff - rousebout, classer and presser. In Kojonup Area most shearing teams were farmers and farmer's son attempting to make money to buy farms, with some Noongar workers trying to survive.
