SHEEP SKIN
1840 - 2026A tanned sheep skin that is hung on a gamble and pulley system. This display represents the farming practice of killing sheep for home consumption. It also represents the large abattoir industry that has been part of the community and the butcher shops that have been part of the town life. The skins of the sheep were also sold to buyers to be used in fur lined boots - as one market. They were usually sold untanned but dried. However tanned and treated skins can be used as rugs or soft linings for cots and aged care beds.
