Painted chalkware figurine of R.A.A.F. airman, Sergeant Arthur Hammond
c. 1942World War Two era painted chalkware or plaster of Paris figurine of R.A.A.F. airman, Sergeant Arthur Quenton Hammond.
It is a moulded, solid figurine painted mainly in blue and red, with the exception of his head. He is wearing his blue tunic, belt and trousers. There are two red stripes encircling his lower trouser legs and his epaulettes, cuffs, buttons and belt buckle are also red.
He is wearing a red sidecap with the letters 'R.A.A.F.' carved into the plaster on one side. He has one arm behind his back and the other forward touching his tunic pocket.
His face is skin coloured and he has blue eyes and rosy cheeks. His hair has been painted in shades of red and yellow.
The unpainted white base has the words 'This is Sgt Arthur Hammond R.A.A.F.'
Arthur Quenton Hammond was a 23 year old farmhand on the family property in Mandinga (Shire of Mt Marshall in the wheatbelt of Western Australia) when he enlisted in March 1941.
He went to Armament school where he trained and qualified as an Armourer with the R.A.A.F. He was discharged in April 1944 at the request of the Directorate of Manpower, so that he could assist with the harvest and running of the farm - a reserved occupation.
