Overview

Part of the Toodyay Library Archaeological Collection.
Largely intact copy of 'The Illustrated London News' August 15 1908 (No. 3617, Vol 133).
News and current affairs magazine, stories include the Wright Brothers, advances in telegraphy, anthropological reports of America and an essay by English Philosopher G. K. Chesterton.
Overall the newspaper is in good condition and still legible, although one page is badly stained and a single page is missing (possibly torn out deliberately).

Historical information

In 2009 a series of upgrades to the Toodyay Public Library were performed by Shire employees, including the addition of a new wing to the rear of the hall and structural repairs to other areas of the building. A total of seventy three (73) objects were recovered from the north wing of the Toodyay Public Library in July 2009.

As work continued with the upgrades, a further two objects (one of which is this artefact) were unearthed in November 2009 beneath the floorboards of the main Library hall. Approx. 400mm of earth beneath the floorboards had been excavated for the purpose of installing a reticulation system to carry termite spray into the building's foundations during annual pest control.

Statement of significance

While most of the archaeological material recovered from the Toodyay Public Library is considered to be low significance, the date and placement of the Illustrated London News is of high significance, as it is a rare item in good condition that directly relates to the historical function of the building.
This item has considerable potential for exciting interest in the history of the building by researchers, schools and the general public.
