STAMPS X 3 AFFIXED TO CARD; 2 X ONE PENNY RED AND 1 X TWOPENCE YELLOW
1902 - 1910Set of three stamps attached to a small piece of card with a Newcastle Post Office franking mark.
Two are 'One Penny Reds' and feature red swan motif bounded by floral pattern & 'Western Australia Postage one Penny'.
The first One Penny Red is in excellent condition and is a clear example of the stamp type, centred and without any blurring or errors. The stamp also bears the Fremantle post office stamp.
The second One Penny Red is in good condition, with only two small tears on the surface of the stamp. The stamp design is however noticeably off-centre. This stamp also bears a smudged Newcastle post office stamp and a date of October 22.
Third is 'Twopence Yellow' featuring yellow swan motif and arced boundary with words 'Western Australia Postage [indescipherable, assumed Two] pence'. The stamp itself is low-fair condition, with a large tear across the centre of the stamp surface. Other than this, the stamp design itself is clear and only slightly off-centre. The stamp has been marked through use, however the alpha-numeric code along the upper edge is cut off.
In July 2011 the Shire Museum Curator received these stamps into the museum collection via post from Mr. John Norden who had found the stamps attached to a card at home and noticing the 'Newcastle' stamp on one of the items decided to donate them to the Newcastle Gaol Museum.

Details
The Newcastle Post Office was completed in November 1897 and continued to operate under that title until the change of the town's name in May 1910, which provides a compatible date to the production, use and markings on the Newcastle stamp. There is therefore a solid date range for these items from 1902 to 1910.
The One Penny Reds are both from the Die 2 printing that was made in Melbourne between September 1905 to October 1911. Seventeen printing runs were made producing a total of 121 million stamps. The main use was for local town letters.
The Twopence Yellow was also made in Melbourne from 1902 to 1912 producing some 54 million stamps and was used mainly for intrastate and interstate letters.
The value of these items lies in their historic significance which provides information on the growth of postal services and communication in turn of the century Western Australia. While these stamps do not have any ground-breaking application for historic research into the state's history, they are a solidly dated window into a specific activity taking place in Toodyay's past.
