Desert Mounted Corps Memorial Bronze Bayonet

1963
Overview

Bronze metallic representation of a 1903 British bayonet (blade only) that is 1 1/2 larger than the actual blade.

Historical information

In 1985 as major conservation work had just finished on the Desert Mounted Corps memorial on Mount Clarence two bayonets were stolen from the statue. The thieves were able to reach the statue due to the temporary scaffolding that was erected around the memorial to carry out the work. The bronze bayonets were reported stolen in June 1985. Then Albany Mayor June Hodgson appealed to the thieves, “I want to appeal to whoever took them to return them and to leave them somewhere where they can be recovered.” However her plea was not heard.
