A brief biography of Amy Johnson written by Midge Gillies for the Amy Johnson Arts Trust
Postcard featuring close up of Amy Johnson next to plane
Greyscale or sepia real photo postcard (RPPC) in vertical orientation featuring pioneer aviatrix, Amy Johnson. She is leaning over the engine of a plane and looking straight at the camera.
Underneath the image in the cream border, the words 'No. 149 Amy Johnson, C.B.E.' are printed in black. Below that on the bottom left is 'Celebrity' series, with the company logo printed on the bottom right.
The card has been used postally and was sent on 6 August 1930 by a young man named Douglas to his aunt and uncle in Balham, southwest London.
The reverse of the card has printed sepia instructions and maker's details in addition to the message from Douglas which is written in black pen.
A red one penny stamp is affixed to the top right corner.
The image on this card was reproduced from a press photo which had a horizontal rather than vertical orientation and showed more of the aircraft's propeller and engine. The description of that photo indicates that Amy Johnson was the first woman to obtain the Air Ministry's ground engineer licence.
A brief biography of Amy Johnson is attached as a supplementary link.
