Black and White Photograph of “Champion Cutter’s Crew 1912”
-1914Formal black and white portrait of the 1912 Champion Cutters crew of 11 men and the coach. The photograph is taken on a wooden deck with the men arranged in 3 rows – 2 rows of 5 men seated with arms crossed and 1 row of 2 men laying on the deck on their sides in front of the seated men. These me are barefoot.
The coach is positioned in the center of the second seated row wearing a dark naval coat and peaked cap. All the other men are dressed in cadet uniforms of dark bell-bottom trousers, white shirts with a contrast square neckline and white hats with tally bands. Behind the men is the outline of a wooden building with doors.
The photograph is square adhered to grey mat board. Above the photo on the board is an oval sticker of a Royal Australian Navy Reserve Crest in blue on a white background.
Below the photograph is a black paper “ribbon” on which is printed the title of the photograph and the names of the people shown.
The photograph is in good condition, but the mat board surround shows some damage at the edges and corners. The black “ribbon is also ripped in several locations. The back of the mat board has considerable damage to the top layer.
The book titled “ROY’S STORY THE LIFE AND TIMES OF ROY PARSONS” (2013) explains that Roy commenced training as a naval cadet in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve (RANR) and in 1912 was part of this winning crew. Roy was a keen rower and joined the Swan River Rowing Club winning the Trial Pairs on 27 June 1914. He also rowed in the Shenton Fours 1914. After the end of the First World War where he served in the Royal Australian Navy, Roy returned to rowing with the Swan River Rowing Club.

Above the photograph is a small oval sticker of the navy crest. The words “ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY ‘circle clockwise from the left-hand side (as viewed) to the right-hand side. There are two (2) dots at the bottom with a small 6-point star in between. Inside the words is shown a chain cabled anchor. The chain crossing from right to left across the anchor shank.
