The date of the photograph has been determined by the ages of the identified children (roughly 11 to 15 years old) for which there is some regional birth, school, and genealogical records publicly available. This is also supported by several visual elements present in the photograph. The prominent presence of modern, chin-length "bobbed" cuts and marcel waves on many of the young women was a sweeping cultural phenomenon of the mid-1920s. The drop-waist lines, relaxed Peter Pan collars, patterned day-dresses, and heavy knit-pull pullover sweaters on the young men directly mirror classic rural Australian school attire of the mid-to-late 1920s.
