He also worked for the Commonwealth Director of Prosecutions in white collar crime. Matt also worked with Alannah MacTiernan. In 2015 he contested the federal by-election for the seat of Canning and lost. In 2016 he contested the new federal seat of Burt and won. He was re-elected in 2019.

The Federal seat of Burt was created in 2015 after the 2015 By-Election for the seat of Canning.
