John Stephen Maley and eight of his nine sons. L-R Back row: Solomon Shenton, Charles Crowther, Frederick William, Albert Edward & Henry Kennedy. Front row: Septimus Frank, Arthur Roy, John Stephen & John Morrison.

The photograph was taken by Charles Nixon and Henry Merrilees who operated as Nixon & Merrilees from 1892. By often using innovative marketing techniques to garner public attention they became the most popular studio in Fremantle. About 1897 they opened a studio in Geraldton. The partnership was dissolved in 1901

Contextual Information

The photograph was taken c1897. It is highly probable there were at least nine copies printed. One is in the State Library collection and another in the Geraldton Historical Society collection.
