Contextual Information

This photo was published in the July 1982 (or 1981) edition of the Northam Advertiser on p. 21.
Accompanying text described the renovation of the property (including the removal of the old upper floor verandah) being undertaken at the time by the Toodyay Society. It noted the upper floor verandah was added after the Sisters of Mercy purchased the building in 1902.
In the October 1986 edition of the Toodyay Herald on p.7 an article reported on the near completion of the renovation of "The Ship" and conjectured about the origin of its name, "The building's nickname is shrouded in mystery but some former pupils believed that the movement of the verandahs in the wind during storms led the pupils to dubb it 'The Ship' ".
