Overview

Two white glazed earthenware saucers displaying visible crazing, a bold cobalt blue rim stripe, and a central blue shield crest with monogram letters and the Latin motto Nobilitas Sola Virtus (Virtue is the only nobility).
The monogram letters "CM" stand for the Convent of Mercy and below them, incorporated into the shield, is the word "Toodyay"

Historical information

Made by Grindley Hotelware Co., Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent,, England and imported by Gibsons & Paterson Pty Ltd. The Trade name "Duraline" was adopted by Grindley around the early 1930s
Gibsons & Paterson Pty. Ltd. served as a prominent Sydney-based importer and wholesale supplier of commercial catering equipment and crockery across Australia and New Zealand for Australasian commercial and hospitality use.

Contextual information

Part of a group of Sisters of Mercy crockery pieces (2020.1, 2020.2, 2020.170 & 2020.171) offered to the museum collection in early 2018.
From 1932 onward, Grindley stamped their hotelware with a clear Month-Year numerical code. Directly underneath the distributor's name on one of the saucer's bases, the stamped code may possibly read 4-41, indicating a production date of April (4th month) 1941. However, the numerals are smudged so it is difficult to be certain.
