Historical information

In 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt sent a United States Navy fleet of 16 white-painted battleships on a 14-month world cruise primarily as a global public relations event.
The Great White Fleet was the popular nickname for this US battle fleet that completed a circumnavigation of the globe from 16 December 1907 to 22 February 1909.
Between 11-18 September 1908, the Great White Fleet visit to Albany was the third and final port of call in Australia. The ships anchored in Princess Royal Harbour and the event was called Fleet Week.

As part of a 100th Anniversary commemorative event of the Great White Fleet the USS SHOUP visited Albany on the weekend of 13-14 September 2008. During the event this USS SHOUP cap was presented to the Princess Royal Fortress Military Museum.
