SELETAR VISIT GIFT 2003

2003
Overview

This plaque was presented to MGGC by Singapore reciprocal club Seletar Country Club during Seletar’s visit to Melville Glades in September 2003.

The front of the pewter plaque features an eagle-like bird in flight looking down, claws at the ready, with the ground and vegetation in view below. It is mounted in a wooden frame which has a silver plaque at the base inscribed with the words stating, in part:

“Presented to Melville Glades Golf Club in commemoration of the inter-club match … 26 September 2003”.

On the rear of the plaque there is some Chinese writing. An internet search interpreted the writing is from a Chinese poem:

"The Roc will one day rise up with the wind, soaring ninety thousand miles up straight".

Roc: In Chinese mythology, the Roc is a giant bird capable of soaring through the sky.

Wind: The wind in this context symbolizes opportunity, momentum, and the force that propels the Roc upwards.

Nine Thousand Miles: This is a symbolic distance representing the vastness of the sky and the potential for the Roc to reach great heights.

Poetic Meaning: The line is often interpreted as a metaphor for overcoming obstacles and achieving one's goals, much like the Roc rising into the sky. It suggests a sense of hope and the belief that one day, their dreams can be realized.

In essence, the line "The great Roc rises with the wind one day" is a powerful image of aspiration, hope, and the potential for extraordinary achievement.

Also on the rear at the bottom is the maker’s name, Royal Selangor Pewter.
