Metal nurse figurine made at R.A.F. Biggin Hill
c. 1940World War Two era nurse figurine made from metal in the workshops at R.A.F. Biggin Hill.
She is wearing her blue-grey ward dress with white apron, collar and cuffs, over which she has her dark blue cape with red lining, secured with red ties. She is wearing a white nurse's cap. The cape has a red-lined hood which rests on the back.
She has a medal on her chest and a white cross on her cape sleeve.
The base is made from a large washer and her cape, dress, apron and cap from thin sheet metal. Her head and body are moulded crudely and she has skinny arms with globular hands.
The whole figurine is painted with gloss enamel paint, some of which has worn off.
One of a pair of metal figurines made in the workshops at R.A.F. Biggin Hill during World War Two, the other being an airman.
R.A.F. Biggin Hill was one of the eight main Sector airfields for Fighter Command 11 Group, commanded by Keith Park. It had a central role in the Battle of Britain; 340 victories were claimed by the airfield, at a cost of 54 pilots.
