Davenport collector plate 'The Battle of North Cape' from 'Action Stations' series
Dinner plate sized vitrified plate entitled 'The Battle of North Cape' in the series 'Action Stations' based on a painting by British artist, Simon A. Smith.
The upper half of the plate depicts the Royal Navy battlecruiser, HMS Duke of York, ploughing through the waves in front of a pink, cloudy sky, with the White Ensign flying above it.
To the right is a map showing the North Sea and the coastal regions of Norway and Sweden, indicating the path taken by the convoy to reach the North Cape.
The lower half of the plate depicts two more Royal Navy ships, below which is the German warship, Scharnhorst. All three warships have their guns firing and plumes of water from where the shells are hitting the water surround the German vessel.
The plate has a gold border just inside from the rim.
The reverse has printed details relating to the production and number of the plate.
The Battle of the North Cape, which occurred on December 26, 1943, involved the Royal Navy's HMS Duke of York and resulted in the sinking of the German battleship Scharnhorst. The battle took place as part of the Arctic campaign, with the Duke of York leading a force of cruisers and destroyers to intercept and destroy the Scharnhorst while it was attempting to attack Allied convoys.
