Historical information

Ian Murray from Toodyay was a Flight Sergeant for the Royal Australian Air Force in WW2, part of a team flying a Lancaster Bomber on missions into Western Europe. In 1943 Murray's bomber was hit by another aircraft, damaging the oxygen supply line and causing fires throughout the cabin. One of the incendiaries landed in Ian Murray's lap; acting quickly, he threw the bomb out the window and put out the fires before they consumed the plane. The bomber managed to return safely to base and Murray was awarded with a Distinguished Flying Medal for his actions.

Ian Vincent Murray (1915-1992) was a Shire of Toodyay Councillor from 1961 - 1983 and previously a member of the Toodyay Road Board from 1953-1961. He served as Shire President from 1971 - 1982.
