PHOTOGRAPH: DREDGING LAKE SHENTON 1977
1977Black and white photograph of dredging machinery and tip truck beside shore of Shenton Park lake, now called lake Jualbup. A stone retaining wall supports edge of lake. Willow trees in foreground, eucalypts in background. The dredge has lifted reeds from the lake bed.
C 2002 removal of the eastern end of the retaining wall, and replanting of reeds, sedges and other swamp plants was welcomed by some residents and criticised by others. The proposal to remove introduced species of trees also caused controversy. The tree removal has not proceeded, but the swamp vegetation is encouraging the natural fauna to breed and shelter near the lake. The local species of turtle now has easier and more natural access to the lake than via the ramps that were provided when the retaining wall was built .
