The Type CRI-43044 Transmitter-Receiver is a unit of the TBY-4 Radio Equipment built under contract NXss-14329 for the Navy Department- Bureau of Ships. The Australian Army encountered this radio in Papua/New Guinea, and the South-West Pacific Theatre both on land and in the ships of General MacArthur's Small Ships Section known colloquially as the Rag-Tag Fleet.
This radio was manufactured for the Navy Department - Bureau of Ships by the Colonial Radio Corporation located in Buffalo , New York . This is the same type of radio used by the USMC Navajo code talkers in WW-2 and as depicted in the 2002 movie "Windtalkers". This radio is one of a few models of the TBY-4 radio transmitter-transceiver. Originally produced in 1941 and used by Navy and Marine Corps personnel as a backpack portable radio.

This radio is located in the Communications Gallery commissioned by the Australian Army Museum of Western Australia as part of the Centenary commemorations of the Royal Australian Corp of Signals. Communication devices used by the Australian Army also are presented in their operational context throughout the Museum.
