DARNING, MAT

Overview

This off white linen mat, is embroidered all over in pulled thread technique. Large open crosses filled with cross stitch. On either side of the crosses, scrolls, almost trefoil in shape, worked in double back stitch.
Edging is four sided stitch and crochet doubles.

This mat was one of four place mats purchased by the donor’s mother and grandmother during their travels in Europe.
Due to lack of space, only one was kept, the others donated to WA Historical Society.

Similar technique emulated in a blue linen runner stitched by Guild Member, Mrs Marcia Nicholson, donated to the Collection, accession number 2017.47.
