SCHWALM, TRAY CLOTH

c. 2000
Overview

Extremely fine example of schwalm embroidery. Worked by Lettie following workshop by Canadian tutor, Shirley Mae Collis, who had gone to a small German village to study the technique. The teacher’s grandson translated for Shirley Mae, but he was often not there as he was visiting his girlfriend. His grandfather would have been furious if he knew.

Design has mirror image of traditional pattern of hearts, tulips, bird motif worked in pulled fabric.
Drawn thread and darning techniques in the motifs.
