Overview

Buckingham Palace Memorial Note signed, “George R.I.”, with a red embossed royal coat of arms and the words, “Buckingham Palace”, at top of note. Printed in black ink, “I join with my grateful people in sending you this memorial of a brave life given for others in the Great War.” It is signed “George R.I.” and would have accompanied the bronze memorial plaque sent to the next of kin following the death of a family member in the First World War.

Contextual information

This ‘Memorial Note’, produced by Buckingham Palace is signed, “George R.I.”, being King George V, and would have accompanied the bronze memorial plaque sent to the next of kin following the death of a family member in the First World War. In this instance the note was sent to the DENNEY family on the death of one of their son’s, both killed at Gallipoli. John was killed in action on the 27 April 1915 and James was killed in action on the 28 June1915.
