The Champion of Champions is a Golf WA sanctioned event conducted at MGGC.
The eligible competitors are the championship winners from all other clubs in WA. It is a 36 hole stroke event run in conjunction with the MGGC Open.
The event was first conducted in 1978. The MGGC 1978 Annual Report includes a statement by the Captain, W. G. Barnes:
'The inaugural Champion of Champions event was held in 1978 and was preceded by a dinner hosted by your management council. Those present were Club Presidents, Captains, Current Club Champions plus invited guests and dignitaries. The event has W.A.G.A. blessing and should be nurtured to become a major amateur event to which eventually interstate Champions will be attracted. Present policy is to play it in conjunction with our annual open event.'
The dinners continued with Council of Management minutes in 1981 stating '… a blazer and tie would be acceptable dress for the … dinner' and in 1982 the dinner had a Master of Ceremonies (Brian Bignell) and speakers (Barry Carbon and Jock Borthwick) with an expected 100 attending. In 1993 '… it was resolved to hold a formal cocktail party in lieu of a ''sit down'' dinner'. A 1995 letter in the archive (item 2023.245) also mentions a Pro Am event was also held on the same day as the Champion of Champions event.
The sponsorship by the Dunhill Cigarette Co. and the provision of the perpetual trophy was arranged in 1979 with the event 'to be held in conjunction with the ''Glades Open'' annually' as noted in the Council of Management Minutes.
