COVID 19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic caused considerable disruption to the operations of the club in the period 2020 to 2023.

 

COVID-19 is the disease caused by a coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. It was first reported in Wuhan, China, in 2019, and subsequently spread globally to become the fifth documented pandemic since the 1918 flu pandemic.

 

The first case of Coronavirus (COVID-19) was confirmed in Australia in late January 2020 with the first case in Western Australia identified on February 21. The State Government subsequently introduced tough restrictions highlighted by a total lockdown between the end of March and end of April 2020.

 

To comply with State Government requirements and to ensure the safety of both Melville Glades members and staff, on 18 March 2020 the club’s Board announced the first of a long series of operational changes. These continued over the following two years and more before the restrictions were essentially removed. The virus had several waves, and these were reflected in government responses which then flowed onto MGGC activities. The restrictions significantly impacted the playing of golf and golf fixtures, use of the clubhouse, social activities, MGGC employees, and the finances of the club.

The first is a chronology of key excerpts from the series of communications prepared by the Board and General Manager and sent to the membership under guidance from government authorities, Clubs WA, Golf WA and Golf Australia. They also convey some of the impacts on members, staff and the operation of the club as a whole.
