Monthly Medal (Men)
During the golf season months of March to October men compete for the Monthly Medal in the traditional monthly Saturday 18 hole stroke play round.
The current winner receives a medal as well as the normal competition prize.
A partial search through historical references to the Monthly Medal suggest that there have been several changes through time.
Council of Management minutes 17/1/1977: 'Alteration of a mug event to a medal event and that medals be presented to winners at the annual Men's Dinner.'
Council of Management minutes 22/2/1979: 'Approval was given to present a pewter tankard suitably inscribed to the monthly medal winner in lieu of the medal.'
Council of Management minutes 25/8/1983 refer to the: 'Montly Medal Stroke Mug' event
Some members of that era recollect that the winner was entitled to free beer by presenting the mug at the bar during the following month.
The Monthly Medal is complementary to the Summer Mug event conducted during the summer months of November to February.
Winners of the Monthly Medal qualify to play in the annual Helfers Medal Shield held at the end of the golf season.
Winners of the Monthly Medals are not recorded in the archive database but commonly appear in the Annual Reports.
