About organisation
Rail Heritage WA was formed in 1959 as the Australian Railway Historical Society (WA Division). Its vision is ‘to facilitate access for present and future generations to the history of railways in Western Australia’. Through the dedication of its volunteers it does this by diverse means including:
• collecting, restoring, maintaining and interpreting Western Australian railway items at the Railway Museum in Bassendean as well as the South-West Rail and Heritage Centre;
• providing public access to the railway history of WA, including through research (answering many family history enquiries) as well as the Museums;
• assisting with the preservation of highly significant items across WA eg providing advice on traditional methods of carriage maintenance especially to regional groups;
• preparation of displays for various public and community events;
• undertaking special projects such as the database of Railwaymen Killed on Duty;
• promotion of key events in railway history eg 100 years of Railways in WA, not only through activities but in social and mainstream media

Collection overview
This collection includes large railway vehicles, small items associated with railway operations, a significant photographic collection and archives and ephemera pertaining to WA railway.
This is the most comprehensive collection of Western Australia's history existing. All collection items have a place in WA's railway history. Some individual railway vehicles have been classified by the National Trust of Australia (WA) but the significance is enhanced by the supporting research, archives and publication. These individual items include the 1880 steam locomotive bought for Perth's first railway line and carriage no. 1 from the Trans-Australian Railway, which is definitely of national significance.
