One of a series of Irish National School Books, printed and published by direction of The Commissioners of National Education in Ireland during the nineteenth century. They included the 'First Book of Lessons' through to the 'Fifth Book of Lessons' as well as books coverings topics such British poets, geography, reading, grammar, arithmetic, mechanics, electricity, chemistry, scripture, agriculture and spelling.
Promotional material for the 'The Fifth Book of Lessons' noted, 'These progressive lessons are particularly suited to more advanced pupils, and include subject omitted in the former volumes of the series, or only cursorily mentioned… With the exception of the historical portion, and a few choice poetical pieces, the lessons are altogether scientific, and contain a mass of information on the various branches of general Science and of Natural Philosophy.'
