British Red Cross Society medallion presented to Catherine M. Topham, 1913
1913Circular silver medallion with a ring attachment at top. The border comprises a laurel wreath and the recessed centre has a depiction of two women wearing flowing robes tending to a wounded person in a forest setting of trees and bushes. Above them, an enamelled red cross (the only colour on the medallion) with rays emanating from it, is illuminating the scene.
The reverse features the same wreath border, while the central recessed area is engraved with the award details. The maker's mark 'G&S Co, Ld' appears at the bottom. There are no silver hallmarks visible.
Catherine M Topham lived in Matlock, Derbyshire and was a member of the British Red Cross Society, Notts Branch, Welbeck prior to World War One. The medallion recognises her winning first prize in a competition during 1913.
During the war, she served at the Red Cross V.A.D. Hospital at Darley Dale from 15 August 1917 until 6 June 1919, doing surgery and ward work.
