This postcard dates from 1905 when Whitworth Hospital operated as a civilian hospital.
During World War One, it became one of many military convalescent hospitals in Derbyshire.
The Red Cross records for Whitworth Red Cross VAD Hospital show that in 1916 there were 55 beds, and by 1918 this had risen to 88 beds.
Patients treated in 1916 totalled 429 which rose to 628 patients in 1918. Around 2,000 soldiers were treated there during the war period.
Catherine M. Topham was one of the Red Cross staff working at this hospital between 1917-1919.
