Metal identification label - Keith Neville Leek, R.A.N.R.
1940Heavy, almost square, metal identification label attributed to Blacksmith Keith Neville Leek, who served with the Royal Australian Naval Reserve and the Royal Australian Navy from 1940-1956.
It is made from brass and has a hole in each of the four corners for attachment.
His surname and initials, service number, rank and service (R.A.N.R.) are stamped into the metal.
Keith Neville Leek was born on 26 August 1919 in Hornsby, New South Wales. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Naval reserve on 24 June 1940 with the rating of 'Blacksmith V' and the service number S4230, as appears on the metal label.
He served at various Naval Shore establishments - HMAS Penguin (Mosman, Sydney), HMAS Rushcutter (Darling Harbour, Sydney), HMAS Leeuwin (Fremantle), and HMAS Melville (Darwin), and on board the ship HMAS Adelaide.
He was transferred to the Royal Australian Navy from 3 June 1946 for a further 6 years, before being discharged from HMAS Penguin on 7 November 1956. He had the rank of Cheif Blacksmith and the service number R31873.
All of the large ships of the Navy were fitted with their own workshops. Skilled workers such as Keith Leek were able to carry out all necessary repairs which were not dockyard jobs, such as fitting studs in cable links and general metal repairs.
