British War Medal
1914A circular medal attached to an ribbon. On the front of the medal is the left profile of the head of King George V while the reverse shows St. George on horse back. At the right hind leg of the horse is a skull and cross bones with a rising sun above. Underneath the left front leg of the horse is the Prussian eagle shield. The ribbon has a central stripe of orange/gold, flanked by stripes of black, white, and dark blue.
This medal was made in silver and was awarded to commemorate some of the most terrible battles ever known. The casualties were astronomical. The medal was issued Post-war 1918-20 to British Service Men & Women and also to some of the native Labour Corps, e.g.; Chinese and Maltese, but only in bronze.

On the front of the medal around the edges are embossed "GEORGIVS V BRITT. OMN. REX ET IND. IMP.".
On the back of the medal around the edges are embossed "1914" and "1918".
On the rim of the medal is engraved "4242 PTE.W.H.C. PEMBLE 16 BN. A.I.F."
