Mundijong Bakehouse and Residence 1905-
1905The first bakehouse in Mundijong was made of timber and built about 1905. Some years later, during the 1920s, a new brick bakehouse was built on Paterson Street, Mundijong in front of the old one. Built by the then baker Cecil Copeman and his two sons, Wally and Ray, it still stands today. The building is made of painted basic brick with small window cavities and with a hipped roof of corrugated iron. The oven is known as a Semi-Scotch with a furnace at the side. There were several changes to the position of baker over the years but the bakehouse produced a consistently high standard of bread and pastries during that time. The last owners were Jack and Barbara Wholagan who took over in 1952 and the business became known as Wholagan's Bakehouse, the name the building is still known as today. The bakehouse was finally purchased by the Pioneer Bakery which unfortunately closed the Mundijong business, transferring the operation to its Armadale premises.
