BUTCHER HOMESTEAD FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH

1924
Overview

A collage of three sepia photographs joined end to end showing the Butcher homestead and property in the Wungong Valley. From the left, the first building was the milking shed, followed by the Homestead. The next was the original house, then used as a packing shed. The central photo shows the orchard plus paddocks, some of which are still in the process of being cleared.
The collage has an olive backing board with a white line framing the picture and a gold edge with text along the lower section [L.& N.Butchers Homestead. Upper Wongong.W A], also has photographers details lower righthand side. Rectangular wooden frame is dark brown with gold highlights flaking off in various places. The backboard is kept in place with rusty nails.

Historical information

Walter Butcher built the house (nearest the orchard) in 1924. The picture later followed the family to Moora where they farmed and then on to the family home at Nedlands. From there it has been passed down through the family.
William and Mary Ann Butcher purchased the land in 1869 but records seem to suggest that they did not live there, instead lived at their properties at Gingin.
In c1882 William Butcher Junior and his new wife Hannah (nee Marsh) took over the running of the Wungong property and moved into the house that had been there some time in the 1870s. The property remained with the family for a number of years. In the 1970s the land was resumed as part of the expansion of the water catchment area for the redeveloped and enlarged Wungong Dam.
The photo is a significant representation of a early 1900s farming property in the district showing the need for mixed farming, the clearing of land and the layout of the orchard.
