Baseball WA Spencer Steven Memorial Trophy
A large, rectangular wooden-based trophy with a central perspex plaque etched with the name of the trophy and the logos of 'Team Spencer' and 'Baseball WA'. The plaque is supported either side by a wooden panel displaying rectangular gold-coloured metal plates, engraved with names of trophy winners from 2010/11 to 2015/16. Either side of the central plaque is a garniture of gold-coloured moulded plastic baseballs on stands. Attached to these stands are discs bearing the logos of 'Team Spencer' and 'Baseball WA'.
Team Spencer was set up by Rick and Ruth Steven in memory of their son Spencer. Spencer was born in 2006 with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) which manifests itself in muscular weakness due to loss of the motor neurons of the spinal cord and brain stem. The earlier the symptoms appear the shorter the life span. When Spencer died at 7 months old, Rick and Ruth planned a fundraising baseball match as a way of giving back to Princess Margaret Children's Hospital for the support they provided with medical and emotional assistance during their journey with Spencer. Following that, TEAM Spencer grew into a major event in conjunction with Perth Heat. In 2010 Rick and Ruth made the decision to donate the funds raised through TEAM Spencer to Muscular Dystrophy Western Australia to help with their vision of finding a cure for SMA.
