Historical information

The modified Land Rover with 106mm RCL was developed in 1960. A total of 69 Series 2 and 2A vehicles were converted and used to equip the anti-tank troops of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps and later the anti-armour platoon of infantry regiments. This type was used in Vietnam by Australian forces. The Series 2 entered service on 11 February 1964 and the Series 2A on 8 July 1966. These vehicles were withdrawn from service in the 1990's.
The M40 bore was commonly described as being 106 mm calibre but is in fact 105 mm; The air-cooled, breech-loaded, single-shot rifle fire fixed ammunition It was designed for direct firing only, and sighting equipment for this purpose was furnished with each weapon, including an affixed spotting rifle. Effective firing range was out to 1350 metres with a maximum of 6,800 metres.
