World War 2, Embroidered Handkerchief, WX3595 TILLOT, 2/7th Field Ambulance
Embroidered Handkerchief with POW No. British Flags, Crests, Countries & Dates fabricated by WX3595 Private Arthur James Tillott,, 2/7th Field Ambulance, as a Prisoner of War #24057,in Stalag VIII 8A, Lamsdorf, Germany.
Private Arthur Tillott was 39 and married when he enlisted in the 2/7 Field Ambulance which was formed in Northam in June 1940. He disembarked from Fremantle 21 September 1940. They supported the attacks on Bardia and Tobruk by the 19th Infantry Brigade. Early April 1941 they moved to Brallos and when forced back by the Germans, evacuated to Crete with the main Dressing Station at Vrysses and Advanced Dressing Stations at Retimo and Georgioupolis. Arthur was marked as missing on Crete in June 1941 and officially reported as a prisoner of war in October 1941. Around 5,000 Australians were taken by rail in closed good wagons in summer heat to Germany which took up to a week. He was interned in Stalag VIII B in January 1942.
In September 1945 he was reported to have an injury, frost bite to both feet and gangrene on all toes and evacuated to St Marys Hospital in Eastbourne UK.
