Historical information

Mr Percy Smith Bignell, born on April 2, 1874, in Deniliquin, New South Wales, was a significant figure in the history of Western Australia. He began his career in Busselton, where he opened a pharmacy and later took over the mail run to Augusta. His innovative transport services included a four-in-hand buggy and later a motor coach, which were essential for conveying visitors to the Yallingup Caves. Bignell's business acumen and dedication to public service were evident in his role as Mayor of Busselton and his involvement in the Southern Districts Agricultural Society. His legacy continues through the history of Busselton and the community he helped to build

This ornate door knocker came from the house once owned by Mr P S Bignell and believed to have been built for Mr R Fairbairn on Queen Street (behind Hobsons store). Building was demolished c1962.

Footnote: The door knocker has been attached to Mr John Herring's Post Office door located in the Reception Area within the museum.
