Overview

A yellow WW2 US seaman's life jacket that has a black rubber breathing tube. The owner married a Busselton girl and left the life jacket behind when he returned to the US.

Historical information

US sailors started to arrive in Western Australia in early 1942 and they were greeted as conquering heroes that would protect us from the Japanese who were bombing our northern outposts. It has been written that the welcome given to the thousands of US navy personnel in WA, over the next 3 years, far outreached that which they received in other parts of Australia. Whilst no US ship visited Busselton during the war it seems that at least one Busselton woman was among the over a thousand WA war brides that returned to the US after the war.
