Site Of Butler's Swamp Siding
2004Railway tracks dominate the right of photograph, running into the background in the centre. Power lines for the railway can be seen. Bottom middle brown woodchip covered dirt predominates. Left dominated by tall yellow grasses with the occasional scrub and, in background, a tree. Housing can be seen background left, while trees and a vehicle can be seen background right.
The original Claremont Station, Butler's Swamp Siding, two hundred metres south of the Claremont Railway Station was the only stop between Perth and Fremantle when the railway was opened in 1881. It served the small holders of Butler's Swamp (Lake Claremont) whose hay and produce went to market, and picnickers who sought the tranquil waters of Freshwater Bay. In 1883 the name was considered unsuitable and residents pressed for the name change to Claremont, and a new railway station on flat land so that the fully laden hay carts would not have to go uphill to the siding. The Claremont Railway Station was designed and built in 1886.
